Abstract

Theory of Mind (ToM) is defined as the ability to identify one’s own mental states and those of others. During an aesthetic experience, students may feel empathy by trying to put themselves in the shoes of the artist or the depicted characters to better understand and make a personal judgment about the work. This experience involves a skill: decoding and sharing others’ emotional experiences. How does ToM manifest in the appreciation of art among primary school students? The results obtained from a longitudinal experiment highlight skills related to ToM and support socio-emotional development.
