This article was born from the shared reflection of a drama teacher and trainer and three researchers in different scientific fields who met in 2013 at the Paris IDEA world congress (International Drama/Theatre and Education Association’s). This event at the crossroads of education, arts and sciences served as the basis for our analysis of the current state of research on theatre education in France and offers additional perspectives on this topic.
We start off looking back at the history of theatre education in France and it highlights the educational culture and its national issues. Then we show how the dialogue with the international community raises new intercultural questions about the use of word-concepts such as theatre education, didactics, pedagogy, drama and performance. Finally, we present the current trends in this field which remains insufficiently developed and we introduce the performative turn based on Varela’s enactive paradigm.
